Wrestling: East Ridge, Woodbury, Park earn top seeds in team section tournament
It's section time for high school wrestling and the Woodbury and Cottage Grove schools are gearing up for a big day on Friday, Feb. 15 at Eagan High School.
The seeds have been finalized and East Ridge, Woodbury and Park are on top of the section leader board.
This Friday is the team section tournament and one team will advance to state, but wrestling has an individual section tournament as well and that's on Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23.
This week the focus is on the team tournament, but next week it'll be more individual based workouts. East Ridge is right underneath Hastings with the No. 2 seed, while Woodbury and Park round out the top four with the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds respectively.
The tournament starts on Friday at 3 p.m., but none of the three schools will be wrestling at that time. The opening rounds will be the lower seeds (seven through 10) and the winners of those duals will reach the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, which start at 4 p.m., the Raptors will wrestle the winner of No. 7 seed Bloomington Kennedy or No. 10 seed St. Paul Harding from the opening round.
Woodbury will be up against the No. 6 seed Henry Sibley, while Park wrestles the home team of No. 5 seed Eagan.
The winners of the quarterfinals will advance to the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. that evening where East Ridge and Woodbury could meet if both win in the quarterfinals. Park would wrestle the winner of Hastings and St. Paul Central/Cretin-Derham Hall if the Wolfpack were to win in the quarterfinals.
The finals will be at 7 p.m. that evening and the winner of the finals will advance to the state tournament, which will run from Feb. 28 to March 2 at the Xcel Energy Center.
