Boys Hockey: Woodbury, East Ridge receive seeds for section tournament
The regular season has come to an end and the coaches came together for the seeds meeting for the section tournament. On Sunday, the brackets were finalized for the upcoming week of tournament play.
East Ridge will be playing in the 3AA section tournament, while Woodbury plays in the section 4AA tournament.
The Raptors received the last seed, No. 9, in tournament and will be in a play-in game on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. East Ridge will travel to No. 8 seed Apple Valley on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Apple Valley Sports Arena.
The winner of that game will play in the quarterfinals against No. 1 seed St. Thomas Academy on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
If the Raptors were to win on Thursday, they will play in the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the highest seed with the finals being on Thursday, Feb. 28 at Braemar Arena at 7 p.m.
Woodbury earned the No. 5 seed in the section tournament and will be playing No. 4 seed Irondale on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Aldrich Arena.
If the Royals win on Saturday, they will advance to the semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Aldrich Arena with the finals being on Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m. at the Aldrich Arena.
Woodbury 4, Tartan 2
It was consistent scoring for Woodbury in all three periods as the Royals won their final regular season game against Tartan on Saturday with a 4-2 final score.
Ben Tarlton scored the first goal of the game, but Tartan came back with a goal to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second period. Zach Bernstein came back with a goal for Woodbury to give the Royals a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. Tartan tied the game up early in the third period.
Quinn Krueger gave the Royals the lead again with a goal and Bernstein scored his second goal of the game to give Woodbury a 4-2 lead.
East Ridge 7, Rochester John Marshall 0
It was a strong way to end the regular season for East Ridge as the Raptors defeated Rochester John Marshall 7-0 on Saturday.
Caden Pratt started off the game with a hot scoring streak as he earned a hat trick by the middle of the second period. He would finish the game with three goals.
Jack Brown and Tanner Stafne completed the second period with goals of their own to make it a 5-0 game for East Ridge.
Finally, Ben Marburger and Brady Andrus ended the game with goals in the third period to take home the 7-0 victory heading into section play next week.
White Bear Lake 1, Woodbury 0
It took only one goal in the entire game on Thursday to determine a winner. White Bear Lake was the team that scored that goal and defeated Woodbury 1-0 in a close, defensive game.
It was a scoreless two periods with back and forth stops from both teams. Then, in the third period, White Bear Lake scored to give the Bears a 1-0 lead and eventual win.
Isaac Wuotila was the goalie for Woodbury and saved 28 of the 29 shots and had a strong 96.6 goal saving percentage.
Woodbury will return to the ice on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Tartan at 3 p.m. before the section tournament begins next week.
Woodbury 6, Park 2
Park and Woodbury had its second head-to-head game of the season, but this game had some importance. The two teams raised money before the game and they combined to raise $4,122.
The Wolfpack started the game with the lead as Samuel Janski found the back of the net. Then, it became all Woodbury as the Royals scored three goals in the second period.
Those goals came from Quinn Krueger, Sean Stuckert and Zach Bernstein. Woodbury took a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.
In the third period, Bernstein scored his second goal of the game to take a 4-1 lead. Matthew Thompson brought the game to 4-2 as he scored a goal for Park.
Krueger finished out the game with two goals to complete the hat trick in the game and give Woodbury the 6-2 win in the rivalry game.
Stillwater 6, East Ridge 1
East Ridge traveled to the TRIA Rink in St. Paul to take on Stillwater on Wednesday night, but the Ponies finished the night with a 6-1 victory.
Stillwater scored two goals in the first period, but East Ridge's Jack Brown cut the lead in half with a goal early in the second period.
The Ponies came back though with a goal in the second period and another three goals in the third period to earn the 6-1 win.
East Ridge will host Rochester John Marshall to end its regular season on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3:15 p.m. before the section tournament begins next week.
Academy of Holy Angels 8, East Ridge 1
It was consistent scoring for Academy of Holy Angels on Tuesday night, which resulted in East Ridge falling 8-1.
The Stars scored two goals in the first period to take a lead early, but East Ridge's Carter Seidl cut the lead in the half early in the second period.
After that Raptor goal, it became Holy Angels' game. The Stars scored two goals in the second period and four more in the third period to win the game 8-1.
East Ridge has a quick turnaround with a game at the TRIA Rink in St. Paul against Stillwater at 7:30 p.m.
