New Life Volleyball: Eagles win Class A Showcase
New Life coach Walter Bomgren said he knew before the season this particular team had the potential to be special. It’s clear now, as the season passed the halfway mark that the savvy veteran knows what he’s talking about.
The Eagles improved to 16-2 on the season with another unblemished week last week. New Life Academy scored a win over PACT Charter School at the beginning of the week, then went 6-0 over the course of two days of competition to champion the Class A Showcase.
Bomgren said he was impressed with his team over the weekend, and he has reason to be impressed. His team hasn’t lost a match since Aug. 28.
“We saw very little lapses during our matches in the Class A Showcase and that was good to see,” Bomgren said. “We faced very good competition and we played very, very steady. We fought through and when we needed to outscore our opponents, we did.”
New Life captains Kara Stenerson, Abby Gorter, and Abby Thor paced the team to victory and were named to the Class A Showcase All-Tournament Team at the end of the weekend. Stenerson was also named tournament MVP.
Stenerson has been the best player on the team this season and has consistently gotten her teammates involved. She has an absurd 517 assists on the season.
“She’s had quite a start to the year and she definitely deserves some recognition for the role she’s played in our success,” Bomgren said.
Bomgren said, as a whole, he’s very proud of his team. He added that he’s not at all surprised with the success it’s seen so far.
“We’ve we knew if our control and our serve and receive was strong, we were going to be a pretty difficult team to deal with this season,” he said. “This is right about where I thought we would be at this point in the season. We need to keep it rolling moving forward.”
The Eagles will press on this weekend with a match against Minneapolis Washburn Sept. 27. They look to continue their winning ways with an eye on October. That’s when the team will face its toughest test yet.
“We still have two of our toughest conference matches of the year coming up against Southwest Christian and Heritage Christian,” Bomgren said. “That will be a good test for us.”
