A barn that caught fire Friday morning in Woodbury is a total loss, Police Commander John Altman said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and no one was hurt. A boat parked near the barn was also a total loss.

The pole barn was located near Century Avenue and Military Road. This area lacks functional fire hydrants, which made it more difficult to fight the fire.

Because of this, firefighters used a "tender-dump tank tactic." Water tankers, or "tenders," quickly dumped water into a "drop tank," which looks like a portable pool. Water in the drop tank was then drawn into a pumper that supplies water to hoses hooked up to a fire truck.

Woodbury firefighters were assisted by Cottage Grove, Lake Elmo, Lower St. Croix Valley, Maplewood and Oakdale departments.
