Middleton students hear a monkey story
Monkeys made mischief at Middleton Elementary School, courtesy of author and illustrator David LaRochelle.
He held hourly sessions Feb. 27 in the school library, where he shared his creative process with students by telling a story and drawing it on the spot.
The subject: Why you should never give a book to a monkey. LaRochelle began by writing numbers one to 10 on an easel. He then turned each digit into a picture that moved the story along.
Spoiler alert: the story eventually involved space aliens and a giant penguin.
The former elementary school teacher, who lives in White Bear Lake, has written nearly a dozen children’s books, including “The Best Pet of All” and “How Martha Saved Her Parents From Green Beans.”
His visit was part of I Love to Read Month and was sponsored by the Middleton Elementary Parent Teacher Association.
