Marketplace of Learning gives Gentle Saturday a new vibe

COTTAGE GROVE — The 25-year-old District 833 Community Education program Gentle Saturday is getting a makeover, to become the Marketplace of Learning.

Adult Enrichment Coordinator Gretchen Carlson said they are mixing things up this year, to bring a new feel to Community Education's twice-annual day-long event to test out programs. The event will be similar to Gentle Saturday, except there will be new opportunities over the lunch break for participants.

There will be a "market" for instructors to display classes, Carlson said.

"The core stays the same," she said. "The addition is ... lunch time is transformed into walking through a common area with those displays."

The market will run 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., between the morning and afternoon classes.

There will be a food truck onsite, as well as many samples from instructors and Great Rivers students (formerly part of the South Washington County Schools ACCESS - Adult College Career English Language Skills Services program).

There will also be a free Zumba class held during that time, from 11:15-11:45 a.m.

The event is free, but registration is encouraged, at

Over 25 morning and afternoon classes will be offered, including felted luminary making, art journaling, nature painting and swing dancing.
