Afton Fest this weekend

Afton will be rounding out its summer of events with the fifth annual Afton Fest.

Afton Fest will be Aug. 9 from 3-10 p.m. in Town Square Park.

The annual event serves as a fundraiser for the Afton Historical Society and the Afton Museum and completes a summer slate in Afton that drew crowds with Afton Strawberry Festival and the city’s annual Fourth of July Parade.

Last year’s Afton Fest had an attendance of about 1,000 and brought in $3,000, said Afton Museum President Stan Ross.

This year’s event will feature live music from the Zebra Muscles, from 6-10 p.m., dancing, food vendors and a beer and wine tent.

Additionally, the event will feature a raffle for an iPad and picnic coolers filled with beer and wine. Raffle tickets are $5.

A new event at this year’s Afton Fest will be a classic car show.

Keeping things classic

Ross said the museum decided to incorporate the classic car show, which will be from 3-6 p.m., into this year’s Afton Fest because it would provide some additional fun and hopefully bring in some more people.

“We’re always trying new things,” Ross said. “We thought the car show would bring some more people into the village and hopefully add another segment of people since car shows are popular and attract a lot of people.”

Ross said the museum has turned to other local car shows in hopes of recruiting exhibitors, including North St. Paul, Hastings and Stillwater.

“We’re just trying to get the word out,” he said. “We’re going to the car shows ourselves and passing out our flyers.

“Anyone with a classic car is invited to come and show off their car.”

Ross said another reason they wanted to incorporate the car show into the event was to bring back an event that has since been lost.

Previously, Selma’s Ice Cream Parlour used to host a classic car show.

“We thought we would try to play off that a little bit,” he said. “We want to continue that tradition and combine it with the other activities.”

The intent if they should get enough cars, Ross said, is to have them on display in the park as well as up and down St. Croix Trail South.

The car show will also be accompanied by 1950s music that will be piped in through a stereo system.

Keeping the museum operating

All proceeds from the beer, wine and raffle sales will go directly back into the Afton Museum.

A portion of the money will be used to help pay for window replacement, which needed to occur following storm damage last year.

The total cost of the repairs is $6,200, which the museum is responsible for covering half of. The city is covering the other half.

Funds raised will also be used for the museum’s annual operating costs of $22,000 since grant money cannot be used for such expenses.

Ross said he hopes this year’s Afton Fest proves to be fun for the whole family.

“We want everyone to come out and have a nice, fun time,” he said.

Afton Fest will be Aug. 9 from 3-10 p.m. in Afton’s Town Square Park. The classic car show will be from 3-6 p.m. and live music from the Zebra Muscles will be from 6-10 p.m.
