Developers and operators of senior care facilities are beginning to recognize the demand for their market in a suburb like Woodbury. With many residents continuing to age in the community and young families raising children near grandparents, the Woodbury senior population has been growing at a much faster rate than all other age groups. The number of seniors age 65-plus increased by more than 82 percent over the past decade, according to U.S. Census data, luring in housing and memory care facilities to the growing east metro suburb.

Washington County is expected to see a jump in health care assistance next year, continued efforts to help neglected and abused children and an increase in family health home visits. The county's community services budget reflects the changes that will up the costs by 1 percent, totaling $39 million. Community Services Director Dan Papin said with the health care exchange program, also known as MNSure, starting this October and coverage beginning in January, the county is expected to see an additional 2,636 cases come through.

Woodbury is expected to continue growing in 2014, bringing in nearly $300,000 in revenue from development fees and permits. The city is proposing a 2.8 percent increase in the property tax levy, the fourth lowest in 20 years, with a slight increase in the average value home's tax bill. City Administrator Clint Gridley said the city is doing well financially, despite the fact that it doesn't benefit from franchise fees, a municipal liquor store or state government aid. "Even if you strip all that out, I think we're in a strong position," he said.

Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens swore in Robin Kivel, Jonathan Miller and Michael Flansburg Wednesday, Aug. 21 at the council chambers, where the officers' families and friends watched and celebrated. Kivel joins the force after working in Spring Valley, Wis. and as a Pierce County sheriff's deputy since 1999. She received her own badge last week marking her start as a Woodbury police officer.
