He reports on and oversees coverage of high school and amateur sports in south Washington County and Woodbury. Prior to joining the Bulletin, Johnson worked for other Twin Cities suburban newspapers. The New Life Academy volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the Section 4A tournament with wins over Bethany Academy and Legacy Christian Academy last week.

Woodbury High School graduates and brothers Brian and Tim Bomgren , who are professional beach volleyball players, beat Olympic gold medalist Phil Dahlhauser and his partner, Sean Rosenthal, in the most recent AVP Beach Tourney in Santa Barbara, Calif. Brian, a 2001 WHS grad, and Tim, a 2006 grad, also won the prestigious Mother Lode Annual Volleyball Classic in Aspen, Co. in August.
