The New Life Academy boys basketball won the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association South Division last week after going 2-1 in three conference games. New Life (18-4; 9-2 MCAA) started its week with a hard-fought 52-47 victory over Bethany Academy on Tuesday, Feb.
The New Life Academy girls basketball team won a pair of Minnesota Christian Athletic Association games last week. The Eagles are currently second in the MCAA behind unbeaten Maranatha. New Life (14-5; 9-1 MCAA) beat Bethany Academy 64-21 on the road Tuesday, Feb. 11, then took down Southwest Christian at home on Friday, Feb.
Forest Lake and Cretin-Derham Hall took down the Woodbury girls basketball team in a pair of Suburban East Conference games last week. Woodbury (6-15; 2-12 SEC) fell 67-42 on Feb. 11, in Forest Lake, then lost 54-39 to Cretin-Derham Hall (13-9; 8-6 SEC) on Friday in Woodbury. Forest Lake jumped out to a 38-24 halftime lead on the Royals then cruised to the 25-point win. Elizabeth Edinger led the Royals with a team-high 12 points. Cecile Kieger chipped in nine points.
The East Ridge girls basketball team’s five-game win streak came to an end last week in back-to-back losses to two of the Suburban East Conference elite teams. East Ridge (15-6; 8-6 SEC) fell 62-44 at Roseville on Tuesday, Feb. 11, before losing to No. 5-ranked White Bear Lake 63-42 at home on Friday, Feb.
The East Ridge boys basketball team kept up its winning ways with a pair of Suburban East Conference victories last week. East Ridge, which has moved up to seventh in the state rankings in Class AAAA, beat Roseville 80-78 on Tuesday at home and took down White Bear Lake 74-64 on the road Friday. The Raptors, now on a six-game win streak, improved to 20-4 overall and 14-2 in the SEC with the wins. East Ridge opened up a 39-32 lead on Roseville (13-11; 10-6 SEC) in the first half then held on for the 8-point victory.
Park’s Evan Bonneson and East Ridge’s Sam Boardman capped their high school cross country skiing careers with all-state honors at the 2013-14 state meet, while Megan Schiferl was just getting started. Both seniors, Bonneson and Boardman finished back-to-back at the state race, held Thursday, Feb.
Buoyed by an 11th place finish by senior Oliver Kennedy, the East Ridge boys alpine ski team finished in seventh place in its second-straight trip to the state meet. As a team, East Ridge scored 102 points to finish ahead of eighth-place Minnetonka (88 points), just three points behind sixth-place Chanhassen and 15 points back of fifth-place Edina.
East Ridge graduate Leah Robinette helped the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women’s gymnastics team finish in second place at the John Zuerlein Invitational at UW-Stout recently and earned UW-Eau Claire athlete of the week honors for Feb. 3-9. UW-Stout won the meet with a score of 183.550 while the Blugolds took second with 178.975 points. Hamline University (Minn.) finished in third place with 177.675 points. Robinette, a sophomore, was one of two Blugolds to win an event, taking first in the uneven bars with a score of 9.350.

The East Ridge competitive cheer team competed at the state competition this past weekend in St. Paul. The East Ridge varsity squad won first place in its division and earned the Grand Champion award, winning over all 32 varsity squads from across the state that competed. The East Ridge JV was awarded second in their division. The culmination of their season is this weekend when both squads earned bids to compete at the UCA National Competition in Orlando, Fla.
