Royals improve eight spots in 2016
The Woodbury girls tennis team continued its strong start to the season last week with a pair of dual-match victories and a second-place finish at Saturday’s Royal-Raptor Invite.
MCAA record grows to 3-0
The Woodbury boys cross country team jumped into the top 10 last Friday at the St. Olaf High School Showcase, a year after finishing 20th in the meet. Joe Romain led the Royals with a sixth-place finish (16 minutes, 54 seconds), and Peter Michalowicz took 59th (17:56), as Woodbury competed in its first meet of the season. “I think that they all performed well,” coach Mark Andrews said. “For the kids to come in ninth, I think that’s a big improvement.”
The East Ridge boys soccer team continued its strong start to the season last week, defeating Minneapolis Washburn 5-0 and St. Paul Harding 8-1. Midfielder Sam Hoeffel scored four goals on the week, including three against St. Paul Harding. East Ridge, ranked second in last week’s Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaching Association poll, improved to 4-0 on the season with the two wins.
New Life Academy’s Tori Moorman won both her matches on Saturday to lead the Eagles at a triangular meet at Winona Cotter. Moorman, the team’s No. 3 singles player, won her first match 6-0, 6-1 over Brittney Krog of Tomah (Wisconsin). She then won her second match of the day over Winona Cotter’s Choco Li, 6-0, 6-1. Elena Draheim, New Life Academy’s No. 4 singles player, won her match against Winona Cotter 6-3, 6-4. The team’s first double pair of Rachel Breiholz and Emme Fry defeated their opponents in a tiebreak, 4-6, 6-4 (10-6).
The New Life Academy girls tennis team had two successful invitational tournaments last week, coach Marcia Bussey said.
East Ridge Volleyball The East Ridge volleyball team needed one set to adjust to Blaine's higher-tempo offense in the season opener. The Raptors had no trouble once they found their rhythm, however, defeating the Bengals 3-1 in the Side Out Classic Saturday at Hopkins High School. Senior outside hitter Allie Barber had 21 kills and sophomore outside hitter Kate Reimann added 15, as East Ridge overcame a 25-17 first-set loss to win the final three sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-12.
East Ridge Boys Soccer Midfielder Sam Hoeffel played sparingly last year as a junior on the East Ridge boys soccer team. He made a strong case for a starting spot last weekend in the team's first two games of the season. Hoeffel scored once in the Raptors' 4-0 win over Rochester John Marshall on Friday and twice Saturday in their 3-0 win over Rochester Mayo, a rematch of last year's Class 2A state quarterfinals.
