ST. PAUL — One of the youngest wrestlers in the field, East Ridge seventh-grader Ryder Rogotzke remains in the hunt for a state championship after Day 1 of the Minnesota state wrestling tournament Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.

Rogotzke, the No. 2 seed in the Class AAA 113-pound bracket, had an 8-3 decision over White Bear Lake's JJ Andress in the first round, followed by an 11-3 major decision against Buffalo's Ryan Scherber in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals Saturday, Rogotzke (47-5) will face off with Shakopee's Ben Lunn for a spot in the finals.

The Raptors have three other wrestlers still in the medal hunt, with Hunter Lyden (120), Roman Rogotzke (132) and Marco Cavallaro (220) staying alive in the wrestlebacks.

Also in the 113 bracket, Woodbury's Cole West remains in medal contention after winning his first match in the wrestlebacks. Brock Rinehart (145) reached the wrestlebacks but lost his first match.

Park's Peter Oyebanji (145) and Garrett Whitehead (160) both won their opening matches before losing the next two. In picking up the opening-round decision against Eden Prairie's Xander Falkenstein, 10-3, Whitehead set a school record with his 40th win of the season.
