Boys Tennis: East Ridge duo finishes in state doubles tennis consolation bracket
The Fridinger boys, Caleb and Luke, stayed alive in the Class AA doubles Thursday in the 2018 state boys tennis tournament.
The East Ridge duo dropped their opening match to Mounds View's Christo Alex and Michael Cao Thursday morning, losing 6-1, 6-4.
But they then scored a solid 6-3, 6-3 win over St. Cloud Tech's Kevin Heller and Richard Zimring in the first round of consolation play to remain in the tournament.
"We were aggressive today," said sophomore Caleb Fridinger. We were good as a team. On the short balls we moved in. We were aggressive at the net.
"I'm proud of the way I competed and I'm proud of what I had control over," added Caleb.
To advance further, the East Ridge dup probably needs to be more aggressive at the net, said eighth grader Luke Fridinger. "Be more aggressive and talk more," said Luke.
The Fridlingers will play Rochester Century's Varun Iver and Matthew Christensen in a consolation semifinal match Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota. That match will start at 8 a.m. If the East Ridge team wins that one, they will play for the consolation championship at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
The East Ridge team was in control the entire consolation match, said East Ridge head coach Suzie Heideman.
"I thought Caleb served really well, which set up a lot of freebies, either on a weak return or just a forced error," said Heideman. "I thought the serving was good, the placement. These guys are ground strokers so it's fun to see them up at the net, too. I think when you put a little bit more pressure on the other team by moving forward. I think you're more successful when we do that.
"But really they're just great players and they're young, so this is great experience," Heideman added."It's fun to see them compete here and hold their own."
The Fridinger brothers ended their state tournament in the consolation semifinals.
