New Life unable to field softball team this year
New Life Academy — which has won five softball state championships since 2008 — won't field a team this season because of a lack of numbers.
"We are not having any high school softball this year," said New Life Athletic Director Kevin Kleiner. "We just did not have the numbers, which I know is probably going to sound crazy to you, and even Woodbury people at large, with our history of softball."
New Life attempted to field a co-op team this spring with Trinity School, but even that proposed venture lacked sufficient numbers, Kleiner said.
The Eagles won their first Class A softball title in 2008, and then followed with state crowns again in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2015.
New Life was 11-10 last season, with three seniors on a 12-player roster.
The Eagles will field a middle school team this spring.
"Our hope is to rebuild from there and maybe do a JV or ninth-grade schedule next year and in a year or two get back to varsity softball," said Kleiner.
