Woodbury tennis: Royals third doubles team seals win vs. Eagan

The Royals were supposed to have home court during their opening tennis match of the season. They didn't get it - and apparently didn't need it.

Woodbury topped Eagan 4-3 April 8 on indoor courts in Apple Valley. The schedule called for Woodbury to be the home team, but due to inclement weather that has stunted most of the spring prep sports season, the two teams played in Apple Valley.

A balanced match-up between the teams left the match at 3-3 with only the No. 3 doubles team left to compete. Woodbury's pairing of senior Kevin McGillis and junior Adam Sicora - both newcomers to the varsity lineup - beat their opponents 7-5, 6-3 to put the Royals over the edge.

"They played the best double out of everyone in the match," said Royals head coach Michael Moran. "They simply deserved to win and simply outplayed their opponents."

The Royals also saw big play from No. 2 singles player - junior Joey Shubert, who won 6-, 7-5. Also winning for Woodbury was junior Ben Sajevic, who cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles. Woodbury's No. 4 singles player, senior Aditya Vasavan, dominated in his 6-0, 6-0 win.

"Our singles lineup is very strong from No. 1 to No. 4," Moran said. "And it showed."

The coach said the deal-sealing win at No. 3 doubles was bolstered by some off-season work that may have paid off. McGillis and Sicora both played USTA junior team tennis last summer through Woodbury Parks and Recreation, often playing together, Moran noted.

"They showed great determination and a lot of heart," he said.

Moran called the win over Eagan "a big first step," but cautioned that there's plenty of tennis left to be played in the 2013 season.

"Great teams play their best tennis at the end of the year, not at the beginning," he said. "We are headed in the right direction with the performance on (April 8)."

The Royals were set to take on Forest Lake on Tuesday, April 16, before playing host on Thursday, April 18, to Park.

Woodbury competes Saturday, April 20, at the Burnsville Invitational.
