Girls' Hockey: Royals get second win of the season
Goaltender Anna Julius picked up her first career varsity girls’ hockey win as Woodbury downed Rochester Mayo 5-2.
Julius stopped 19 shots in net for the Royals as her team rebounded from an early first-period score by the Spartans on Thursday. Julius finished with a .905 save percentage.
“It’s really nice to see the girls get a win for the effort that they’ve been putting in and how much they’ve improved,” Royals coach Chris Lepper said.
Shannon Motzko tied the game for the Royals on a power-play goal in the second period. Victoria Sweeny and Annika Johnson assisted on the score.
Lexie Decker put the Royals ahead 2-1 on another power-play goal in the period. Isabel Chmielewski and Grace Swenson assisted on the go-ahead goal.
Woodbury never trailed again despite Rochester Mayo tying things up 2-2 later in the period. Lappai Isabel put the Royals ahead for good on a goal in the second, assisted by Amy Haslerud and Aliza Welch.
Isabel extended the Royals lead in the third period to 4-2 with a goal on assists by Erin Jeseritz and Decker. Motzko sealed the game late with another goal on assists from Johnson and Sweeney.
Woodbury (2-17) won its first game since Nov. 15, ending a 15-game losing streak.
