Woodbury closed out the regular season strong against Rosemount before beginning section tournament play.

The win preceded the Royals’ first game of the Section 4AAA tournament, where Woodbury lost 4-3 to Stillwater. The loss sent No. 4-seeded Woodbury into the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament, where they faced No. 8-seeded Henry Sibley on Monday, May 26.

Full playoff results were not available by press time.

A win over Sibley would pit the Royals against the loser of the Cretin-Derham Hall-East Ridge game. That game would be played Thursday, May 29, at Midway Stadium in St. Paul.

During the regular season, the Royals familiarized themselves with Midway when they beat Tartan 5-0 at the St. Paul Saints home field on May 6. With the Saints moving to a new ball park in 2015, this year’s Section 4AAA tourney may mark the last at the historic minor league ball park.

Against Rosemount, Logan Welch batted 1-for-2 and drove in three runs as the Royals downed the Irish 7-1 on Monday, May 19. Four different Royals saw time on the mound as they held the Irish to six hits.

“It was good to give us some momentum heading into the playoffs,” Royals coach Kevin McDermott said.

Jacob Dickmeyer pitched the most with three innings and three strikeouts for Woodbury. Brady Mundahl went two innings and fanned three batters. Nick Bentley and Nick Yan also pitched and held Rosemount hitless in their 1 2/3 innings combined.

Mundahl also went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
