Woodbury basketball: Royals thump Polars in section quarterfinals

Despite a slow start, Woodbury eventually separated itself from the competition in a big way Wednesday in the Section 4-4A quarterfinals.

The top-seeded Royals crushed the No. 8-seeded North St. Paul Polars at home, 83-47.

Standout senior Matt Ambriz, who sat out the regular season finale with an injured ankle, returned in full force on Wednesday, scoring 19 points for Woodbury.

Fellow Woodbury senior Isaiah Coddon led all scorers with 21 points. Ben Rizzardi, a senior center for the Royals, scored 16, while teammate Ben Meyer added 13.

A total of eight Woodbury players recorded points in the game.

The Royals played without starting point guard Nick Yan, who was sidelined with a sprained ankle sustained in the season finale against White Bear Lake. Woodbury coach Scott Swansson said Yan hopes to practice today.

The Royals’ next game is Saturday, when they play No. 5-seeded Stillwater. The semifinal game tips off at 7:30 p.m. at East Ridge. The other semifinal game pits No. 2-seeded Mounds View against Tartan, the No. 3 seed. That game, also played at East Ridge, begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The section title game will be 8 p.m. Wednesday at East Ridge.
