Woodbury reasserted itself as the defending section champion Thursday with a 37-33 victory over Stillwater in a rematch of last year’s section title match in Woodbury.

Despite the victory, Royals head coach Justin Smith wasn’t entirely pleased with the result.

“We’re not going to make a return trip to the state tournament if we come out and wrestle like that,” Smith said. “Solid technique wasn’t there out of a lot of our kids. Just doing stuff they don’t normally do. It was frustrating. If it was four years ago or three years ago we would have been like, ‘You know what we beat Stillwater, that’s great.’ We’re done with that. The expectations have risen.

Second-ranked Justin Herold-Plakut won at 170 pounds and senior Howard Jones won by fall at 182 pounds in 26 seconds to pad Woodbury’s 37-21 lead.

The Royals dropped the final three matches.

The Ponies forfeited three weights, including a match to sixth-ranked Ben Donnelly at 160 pounds and fourth-ranked Ty Johnson at 132 pounds.

Matt Delaney won a pivotal match at 145 with a 6-2 decision that gave Woodbury a 21-18 lead at the time. Sixth-ranked Austin Braun won by fall at 120 pounds with a pin in 1:28.

The Royals face Cretin-Derham Hall Thursday in Woodbury.
