Woodbury girls basketball: Young Royals lose rematch to Central

The youthful Woodbury girls basketball team was dealt its first loss of the year on Friday – a 63-49 defeat at the hands of St. Paul Central in St. Paul.

One of the state’s top teams, Central – a Section 4AAAA foe of Woodbury – knocked the Royals out of the playoffs last year in the section finals on the way to the state tournament.

In this season’s rematch, St. Paul Central (5-1) opened up a 25-19 first-half lead and built on it in the second half, outscoring the Royals 38-30 after the break.

Freshman forward Cecile Kieger led the way for Woodbury (3-1) in the game with a game-high 17 points. Junior guard Madi Yochum scored nine points and senior guard Kalley Hakes and junior guard Kayla Bilski each chipped in seven points.

Four different players scored in double figures for Central, led by Chelsie Kizart with 15 points.

Hakes is the lone senior on the Royals’ roster this season. In addition, Woodbury has three juniors, four sophomores, six freshmen and an eighth grader on the team this year.

Woodbury played host to Mounds View (3-1) on Tuesday, Dec. 17, after the Bulletin went to print, to open Suburban East Conference play. Next, the Royals are at Farmington (3-2) on Thursday, before welcoming SEC opponent Hastings (1-3) to Woodbury on Friday.
