Woodbury girls basketball: Royals win Winter Wonderland tourney

The Woodbury girls basketball team started the season on the right foot this past week.

Woodbury (2-0) opened the season with a pair of wins on its home court, beating North St. Paul 57-33 on Friday, Dec. 6, then topping Minneapolis Washburn 60-58 on Saturday, Dec. 7, to take the Winter Wonderland Tournament championship title in Woodbury.

In the win over North St. Paul, Woodbury jumped out to a 34-12 lead on the Polars (0-2) and never looked back. Woodbury senior guard Kalley Hakes led the way for the Royals with a team-high 13 points and junior forward Ellie Blanchfield scored eight points.

Against Washburn, Woodbury opened up a 32-25 lead at the half then held off the Millers (1-2) in the second half for the victory. Woodbury junior guard Madi Yochum scored a team-best 17 points and Hakes again helped lead the offense with 15 points, while Blanchfield chipped in 10 points. Washburn’s Chase Cooley led all scorers with 25 points.

Next, Woodbury hits the road and will face section rival St. Paul Central (3-1) on Friday.
