Woodbury wrestling: Royals start 3-0; Herold-Plakut sets record

Woodbury opened the season with three victories Friday at Eastview.

The Royals beat St. Paul Central 61-15, Lakeville South 45-18 and the Lightning 34-33.

Austin Braun, Matt Delaney, Ben Donnelly, Justin Herold-Plakut and Anthony Doreo each went undefeated at the quadrangular.

At the tournament, Woodbury senior Justin Herold-Plakut reached another milestone Saturday at the Lakeville North Panther Invite in Lakeville.

Herold-Plakut, who is ranked third at 160 pounds, broke the school record for career victories with a quarterfinal win over Lakeville South’s Mark Kennedy for his 176th career victory. Herold-Plakut pinned Kennedy in 3 minutes, 17 seconds and went on to win the 170-pound weight class.

The Royals finished fourth Saturday at the 15-team Lakeville North Panther Invite in Lakeville.

Woodbury finished with 126.5 points and edged out district rival Park by 7.5 points. Scott West won the tournament with 239 points while Lakeville North took second with 159 and Hudson placed third with 150.5 points.

Freshman Austin Braun took second at 120 pounds, falling in the championship to Park’s Collin LaBrosse. Senior Howard Jones fell in the 182-pound championship match for second place. Junior Ty Johnson took third at 132 pounds and senior Matt Delaney went on to finish third. Donnelly and Doreo each finished fourth.

The Royals face Stillwater Thursday in Woodbury in a rematch of last year’s section championship match.
