East Ridge boys golf: Dorf, Hanson heading to state for Raptors

East Ridge juniors Travis Dorf, above, and Brady Hanson each earned trips to state as the Raptors finished in second place in the two-day Section 3AAA Championship Tournament.

In the most important tournament of the season, the East Ridge boys golf team put it all together -- and nearly came away with the biggest prize.

East Ridge finished in second place in the two-day Section 3AAA Championship Tournament, held between Keller Golf Course in St. Paul and Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids. The Raptors shot a 631 36-hole total to take runner up - behind Eagan (626) and ahead of Hastings (636).

"Overall I'm very proud of these guys," East Ridge head coach Brett Brookins said. "This is the first time we've been in this situation and the pressure is different. Anyone who plays golf or watches it on television knows that some days are better than others. We had a couple great scores and couple good scores, but in the end unfortunately, day two we ended up five shots off the lead team Eagan. They played really well."

Out of section play, only one team advances to state, based on the two-day total, along with five individuals not on the top team.

Though it narrowly missed a berth as a team, East Ridge is sending two golfers to the state tournament individually. East Ridge juniors Brady Hanson and Travis Dorf each earned trips to state.

Not counting Eagan's scores, Hanson finished with the third-best round overall with a two-day 152, shooting a 74 on the first day and a 78 on day No. 2. Dorf had the fourth-best round, shooting a 154 with an 80 on the day No. 1 and a 74 on day No. 2.

At the section tournament, East Ridge held a four stroke lead after the first day, shooting a 309 at Keller. East Ridge senior Jaik Winbush led the way on the day with a 1-over par 72, followed by Hanson (74), Dorf (80) and sophomore Jack Caron (83). However, on the second day, the Raptors shot a 322 to finish in second place, five shots behind Eagan. Dorf (74) had the best score for East Ridge, going 2-over-par. Hanson (78), junior Tom Tuohy (84) and Caron and junior Tyler Fitzsimmons (86 apiece) rounded out the Raptors' top four.

"As the captain of the team Brady Hanson has turned out to be a strong leader this year and the work he put in to improve his game in season and off season has paid off," Brookins said. "Travis has worked hard on improving his game as well and this was evident with him shooting 74 on day two at Bunker. Both golfers will do a great job representing East Ridge at state."
