East Ridge wrestling: Bachmann's season ends at state
All he could do was watch.
East Ridge senior Nick Bachmann's high school wrestling career ended after the opening round of the Class AAA state wrestling tournament on Friday, March 4, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Bachmann suffered a loss to Lakeville South senior Eric Hensel in the opening round of the tournament, but had a chance to stay alive.
Because of the loss, Bachmann -- who was 30-8 on the year and unranked in Class AAA at 171 pounds -- needed Hensel, who was 38-0 on the year and ranked second in Class AAA at 171 pounds, to defeat Cambridge-Isanti junior Clayton Jennissen (38-6) in the Class AAA individual quarterfinals in order to continue in the consolation round or "wrestlebacks," where he could contend for as high as third place. However, Hensel lost to the third-ranked Jennissen 9-5 in the quarterfinals, ending Bachmann's state tournament and high school wrestling career.
