East Ridge girls basketball: Raptors start season 3-0, win Henry Sibley tourney

East Ridge senior Hannah Pignato brings the ball up the court in the Raptors' win over Burnsville last week. Pignato had 17 points in the game.

The first week couldn't have gone much better for the East Ridge girls basketball team.

The Raptors started their 2012-13 campaign a perfect 3-0 and no opponent came within 20 points. Talk about getting off to a hot start.

One player who has had early success is junior forward Jamie Swanson, who has been a major threat from the 3-point line.

East Ridge started the season against Burnsville and came away with a 67-46 win.

Swanson led the team with 21 points, nine of them coming from deep. Senior guard Hannah Pignato pitched in with 17 points, while senior guard Brianna Walker added 11.

Next up was South St. Paul (2-1). The results weren't much different, as the Raptors won 58-36. Swanson mirrored her game against Burnsville (0-1), scoring 21 points while hitting three 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Amanda Robinson played a great all-around game and added 10 points.

Head coach Glen Wurm notes that the East Ridge defense was on display and played very well.

The last game of the week came against Henry Sibley (0-3) and the results were more of the same, with East Ridge winning 66-42, behind a full-court press defense that the Warriors weren't able to keep up with.

Pignanto led all scorers with 15 points, while Swanson scored 14 points, four of them coming from downtown. In total, the Raptors scored 30 points from the 3-point line and 13 players scored.

The Raptors played Como Park (2-0) on Tuesday after the Bulletin went to print. Next, East Ridge heads to Irondale (0-2) on Friday.

Both opponents finished with losing records last season, so it's very possible that the Raptors start the season 5-0, something that would be truly spectacular for the program, considering East Ridge won just eight games all of last season.

The Raptors played in nine games before reaching the five win plateau last season.
