East Ridge girls hockey: Raptors beat Bears for first win

East Ridge's Jaedyn Walz and the Raptors girls hockey team recorded its first win of the season Nov. 27 against host White Bear Lake.

After a rough start to the 2012-13 season, the East Ridge girls hockey team looks like it may be turning things around.

The Raptors notched its first win of the season Nov. 27 with a 1-0 victory over Suburban East Conference rival White Bear Lake behind a commanding shutout performance by goalie Katie Flanders.

After a first period goal by Katherine Scheibner in the 16th minute, the Raptors (1-5; 1-1 SEC) were able to play stellar defense to stop any scoring chances that White Bear had.

East Ridge was able to outshoot the Bears (2-2-1; 0-1-1 SEC) by six with 26 shots on the night. Flanders recorded 20 saves in the shutout win.

Each team had one penalty during the game, but neither team was able to capitalize on the power play.

On Friday night, East Ridge lost a close game at home against perennial conference power Stillwater 2-1.

The Raptors scored first off the stick of Jaedyn Walz in the 13th minute with an assist from Maggie Ahmann.

Ahmann recorded the assist shortly after rejoining the team on the ice after serving a two-minute minor for roughing.

Stillwater was able to score the equalizer in the second period, however, and they scored the go-ahead winner in the third period with a minute and a half remaining in the game.

Stillwater (2-3-1; 1-1 SEC) outshot the Raptors 35-30 in a penalty-ridden game. The Raptors committed eight penalties, while Stillwater had six.

Flanders recorded 33 saves in the loss for East Ridge.

East Ridge took on Park on Tuesday night after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Raptors face off with Mounds View at home on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
