East Ridge boys soccer: Vang delivers game winner against Chanhassen

Kristofer Broughton and the East Ridge boys soccer team beat Chanhassen 1-0 in overtime in a non-conference game last week.

The East Ridge boys soccer team got ample opportunities Saturday against Chanhassen in Woodbury but it took 88 minutes before the Raptors got the goal they needed for a 1-0 victory.

Steven Vang hit a low shot to the right corner of the net with 1 minute, 30 seconds left to play in overtime to lift East Ridge to its third victory in four games.

"We had a lot of chances, couldn't find the back of the net," Vang said. "I finally finished one."

The Raptors (4-2-1, 1-2 SEC) controlled the run of play for the majority of the game and found themselves coming up short with each shot.

"I think the decision making in the final third can improve that's just something that comes with training," East Ridge head coach Anthony Bidwell said. "It's not an easy task."

The Raptors had numerous chances to score but the opportunities weren't always quality.

"The first half our shots were just not quality," Merlin Erickson said. "We were making it too easy for the opposing goalie. The second half was difficult just because we had the wind in front of us and it was hard to get a good, quality shot off from outside the 18 and we were having trouble working inside the 18 to find a good shot."

The win made up for a 2-1 loss Tuesday to third-ranked Stillwater. Stillwater scored the go-ahead goal in the second half on what Bidwell said was a questionable offsides call around the 64-minute mark.

After the Ponies went up 1-0 in the first half Conner Stevenson scored from 22 yards out on a shot to the lower far post of the goal.

Again, the Raptors had plenty of opportunities but failed to finish. East Ridge hit the crossbar multiple times but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Raptors face White Bear Lake Thursday in White Bear Lake.
