East Ridge boys hockey: Raptors earn draw with Stillwater

The East Ridge boys hockey team continued to play tight games with tough competition last week.

The Raptors earned a 2-2 tie with Suburban East Conference foe Stillwater in its lone game last week, on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Cottage Grove Ice Arena.

"We need to find a way to put more pucks in the net and stay out of the penalty box," East Ridge head coach Doug Long said.

East Ridge junior forward Devin Donohue scored both of the Raptors' goals in the game and junior Jack Greeley tallied two assists.

It was the Raptors second tie of the season and the sixth game out of nine played decided by a goal or less.

After a scoreless first period, Stillwater (4-1-2; 3-0-2 SEC) took a 1-0 lead in the game with 5:46 remaining in the second period.

East Ridge (2-5-2; 0-3-2 SEC) came right back, however, as Donohue scored with 2:20 left on the clock. In the third period, Donohue gave East Ridge a 2-1 lead 6:22 into the final frame, but Stillwater scored the equalizer just over two minutes later and neither team would score again.

East Ridge had 18 shots on goal in the game, while East Ridge senior goalie Andrew McDonough made 17 saves for the Raptors.

"Andrew McDonough continues to play well in the nets for us," Long said. "He has a 2.43 goals against average which gives us a chance every night to win."

On the year, Ian Penvose leads the team in scoring with 10 points followed by Greeley with eight points.

Next, East Ridge plays host to 20th ranked White Bear Lake (4-4-1; 3-0-1 SEC) on Thursday, Dec. 29, in the Suburban East.

"They have a few players that are offensively gifted and a strong core of defenseman returning from their state tournament team," Long said. "It will be a good opportunity to get a big win. We have a lot of practice time in the next eight days, so we should be ready."
