East Ridge boys swimming and diving: Raptors break records at conference relays

East Ridge started its 2011-2012 season in tremendous fashion, placing first in two of nine events and breaking two previous records on Thursday, Dec. 8, as they competed against nine other teams, including intra-district foes Park and Woodbury, in the Suburban East Conference Relays held at Stillwater Junior High.

Parents, swimmers, coaches and onlookers alike piled into the crowded pool area to cheer on their respective teams during the opener. With such high energy all around them, East Ridge seemed determined to start their season off with a bang. Opening the conference with the 400 yard medley relay, East Ridge seniors Austin Davidson and Matt Koken, sophomore Sam Scholz and freshman Kent Rabideaux took first place in the event and set a new record with their collective time of 3:43.71, beating Stillwater's 2006 record of 3:44.40.

In the fifth event, the Raptors once again took first place and beat Cretin-Derham Hall's 2009 1:42.76 meet record in the 200 yard butterfly relay after Koken, Davidson, Kent Rabideaux and senior Nate Rabideaux finished with a time of 1:39.37.

East Ridge finished second in the 200 yard breaststroke relay after seniors Justin Kong and Alex Thiede, sophomore David Scholz and Kent Rabideaux finished the event with a 2:06.38 final time.

East Ridge's time of 4:05.34 nabbed them third place in the 400 yard relay. East Ridge came in fourth in the 400 yard freestyle relay, fifth in the 800 yard freestyle, and sixth in the 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard backstroke events.

East Ridge also took fifth place in the diving event with their overall score of 147.30, trailing behind third-place Roseville's score of 159.30, second-place White Bear Lake's score of 159.40, and Stillwater's 178.50 first place score.

Raptors first-year head coach Steve Webb said he was pleased with the results of Thursday night's conference, adding that he was very happy that the team walked away with two new records.

Overall, East Ridge placed third in the conference relays with 98 points, just behind second-place Mounds View with 110 points and first-place Stillwater, which scored 114 points. East Ridge rivals Woodbury and Park finished in fifth and eighth place, respectively.

Next, the Raptors travel to Mounds View on Thursday, Dec. 15, where they go up against 2010-2011 conference champions the Mounds View Mustangs.
