Seedings announced for volleyball sectionals

Seedings were announced for the Section 4AAA volleyball tournament, with Woodbury claiming a No. 3 seed and East Ridge taking a No. 5 as competition is scheduled to begin next Tuesday.

The Section 4A bracket was also formed, with New Life Academy earning a No. 3 seed in its subsection. If seeds follow form, Eagles will host two sectional playoff matches.

The Royals earned a first-round bye with their bracket position, with Suburban East Conference champion Stillwater and Classic Suburban Conference title-holder Hill-Murray installed as the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively.

Woodbury (14-13 overall, 6-3 SEC) will host either No. 6 Roseville or No. 11 Henry Sibley next Thursday at 7 p.m. in The Lion's Den.

East Ridge (14-11 overall, 4-5 SEC) came up one slot short of a first-round bye with the fifth seed. Despite defeating Cretin-Derham Hall (15-7 overall, 5-4 SEC) in their lone meeting of the season in St. Paul, the Raiders' superior overall and league records were enough to ensure the fourth seed and final bye.

East Ridge will get another shot at Cretin if it can top No. 12 seed South St. Paul a Tuesday night showdown at 7 p.m. in The Raptors' Roost.

The Raptors and Royals are on opposite sides of the bracket, meaning any rematch between the cross-town clubs -- the Royals won the first meeting in four games -- would have to occur in the final, scheduled to be played at St. Paul Arlington on Nov. 6. The 4AAA semifinals are also to be competed on the home floor of the Phoenix two days earlier.

Woodbury has been off since playing in the Eastview Invitational last weekend, yet East Ridge has been in action this week.

The Raptors topped neighboring New Life Academy in a three-game sweep on Tuesday and hosts St. Paul Harding in their final regular-season match tonight.

The Eagles volleyball team, 11-15 on the season heading into its regular-season finale against West Lutheran on Thursday, took the No. 3 seed in its Section 4A subsection grouping and is slated to host 14th-seeded Community of Peace Academy next Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Barring an upset, New Life will advance to host either No. 8 Bethany Academy or No. 11 St. Paul Humboldt next Thursday. The subsection semifinal is scheduled for Nov. 3, with the final taking place Nov. 5. The Section 4A championship, played between the two subsection winners, is set for No. 7 at Minnehaha Academy in south Minneapolis.
