Woodbury softball: Mikschal gains first win in rivalry game

Though the future looks bright for the Woodbury softball team, things don’t look too shabby in the present either.

Woodbury won its first two Suburban East Conference games of the 2014 season last week, including an exciting 4-3 win over rival East Ridge to kick off the year on April 9.

Woodbury freshman pitcher Ashley Mikschal earned her first varsity win over the Raptors (1-2; 0-2 SEC) with freshman catcher Shannon Motzko behind the plate.

Mikschal scattered five hits and struck out seven Raptors in the win for the Royals (2-0; 2-0 SEC).

At the plate, Woodbury sophomore Alexis Jacobs went 3-for-4 and senior Caitlin Balsimo knocked in three runs with two hits. Balsimo is one of just three seniors on the Royals’ roster this year.

On Friday, April 11, the Royals beat White Bear Lake 5-1. Balsimo got the start in the pitcher’s circle, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out seven. Senior Jordyn Yourczeck knocked in two runs on two hits for the Royals, Jacobs went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and junior Ellie Blanchfield went 3-for-3 with a run scored in the win over the Bears (0-3; 0-3 SEC).

Woodbury played host to Cretin-Derham Hall (0-3; 0-3 SEC) on Monday, April 14, after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Royals are at Mounds View (1-1; 1-1 SEC) on Wednesday, April 16.
