Woodbury girls basketball: Central ends Royals’ season in sections

An upset of St. Paul Central fell short for the youthful Woodbury girls basketball team in the opening round of the Section 4AAAA playoffs.

Woodbury, the sixth seed, led 22-14 at the half over third-seeded St. Paul Central. However, the Royals’ grip slipped in the second half as St. Paul Central (23-5) won the second half battle 35-16 and escaped its home court with a 9-point win.

Woodbury freshman forward Cecile Kieger led the Royals with a team-high 15 points. Junior forward Ellie Blanchfield added 12 points for Woodbury (6-21).

The loss capped a tough season for the Royals. On the heels of a 19-10 year, the Royals jumped out to a 5-1 start, but went 1-20 the rest of the way. Woodbury went 1-17 following head coach Nathan McGuire being placed on administrative leave from his coaching duties by the South Washington County School District because of an investigation following unnamed allegations.

Woodbury graduates just one senior from its roster – Kalley Hakes.
