Woodbury girls basketball: Royals draw sixth seed, St. Paul Central in playoffs

The Woodbury girls basketball team ended the season on an eight-game losing streak and garnered the sixth seed in the Section 4AAAA tournament.

Woodbury finished the year 6-20 overall and 2-16 in the Suburban East Conference, which was ninth in the 10-team league.

Woodbury ended the season with a 70-43 loss at Park (19-6; 15-3 SEC) on Tuesday, Feb. 25, and a 48-43 defeat on the road at the hands of Stillwater (9-17; 5-13 SEC) on Friday in the season finale.

Woodbury hung with Park, which won a share of the SEC championship title along with White Bear Lake this season, for the first half. The Royals were down 38-22 at the break then played to a 32-21 second half in the loss.

Cecile Kieger scored nine points to lead the Royals, while Kayla Bilski chipped in eight points.

Woodbury was down just six points, 26-20, at the half against Stillwater. The Royals outscored the Ponies 23-22 in the second half, but couldn’t get over the hump.

Woodbury will look to try to upset No. 3 seed St. Paul Central (21-5) in St. Paul in the playoff opener on Wednesday, March 5. White Bear Lake (23-3) is the region’s top seed.
