East Ridge boys basketball: Tomes' 36 lead Raptors past Eastview in playoff opener

Junior point guard Sid Tomes exploded for a season-high 36 points to help lift second-seeded East Ridge to a 69-44 win over seventh-seeded Eastview in the opening round of the Section 3AAAA boys basketball tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at The Perch in Woodbury.

East Ridge (23-4) held a slim, 29-23, lead over the Lightning (6-21) after the first half, however, led by Tomes, the Raptors outscored Eastview 40-21 in the second half to avoid an upset.

East Ridge has now won nine straight games.

Tomes was the only player to score in double figures for East Ridge in the win. Senior guard Jake Knupp chipped in eight points for the Raptors.

The win sets up a semifinal match with Suburban East Conference rival Cretin-Derham Hall (21-6) on Saturday, March 1, at 2:45 p.m. at Farmington High School.

East Ridge split its regular-season series with the Raiders. Cretin-Derham Hall won 67-59 in St. Paul on Jan. 14. East Ridge won 54-53 in Woodbury on Feb. 18.

Cretin-Derham Hall beat sixth-seeded Henry Sibley (12-14) 58-43 in the first round.

No. 1-seeded Apple Valley, the No. 1-ranked team in the state and the defending state champion, takes on fourth-seeded Rosemount (15-12) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Farmington in the other semifinal. Apple Valley (26-1) beat Park 87-40 in the first round.
