VFW baseball: Topp four-hitter lifts Woodbury over White Bear

Ryan Topp threw a four-hit complete-game victory June 22 for the Woodbury VFW baseball team in an 8-1 victory over White Bear Lake in Woodbury.

Topp also had two hits, along with Brady Mundahl and Logan Welch. Topp struck out three for the game and kept White Bear Lake off the board until the seventh inning.

Woodbury had control of the game by that point after scoring three runs in the first and second innings. Woodbury added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to build an 8-0 lead.

Mundahl, Jordan Wilkerson and Brian Norlander each recorded RBI in the game and Chris Starwood drew two walks. Mundahl hit a triple and a double in the game. Norlander also had two steals in the game.

Jack Kohlbeck and Max Newman also added RBI for Woodbury (5-8) in the victory.

Prior to the win over White Bear Lake, Ranview eked out a 7-6, 10-inning victory Tuesday against the Woodbury VFW baseball team in St. Paul.

Woodbury trailed 5-4 heading into the top of the seventh inning, but took a one-run lead in the top half of the inning for a 6-5 lead. The lead didn't hold as Ranview rallied to tie the game and go on to win in the 10th inning.

Wilkerson and Max Newman each drove in two runs while Norlander and Jack Kohlbeck added RBI. Mundahl and Wilkerson each hit doubles for Woodbury. Mundahl collected four hits and stole two bases. Wilkerson had three hits and two walks.

Newman started on the mound for Woodbury and threw seven innings, allowing six runs and striking out four.
