2013 Spring Preview: New Woodbury boys lacrosse coach fields team led by Lyden, host of seniors

Jack Lyden returns to the Woodbury boys lacrosse team this spring. Lyden, a senior, led the team in scoring with 24 points last year.

In his first year as head coach of the Woodbury boys lacrosse team, longtime assistant Jason Worwa will welcome back a majority of key players from last year's squad.

"We have a lot of returning players this year and a big senior class so we expect some really good play by our team this season," Worwa said. "I think we'll be able to hit the ground running this year."

Under Rich Limpert, who left Woodbury to take over the University of Minnesota men's lacrosse program, the Royals went 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the Suburban East Conference in 2012.

Woodbury's season came to an end with a 5-3 loss to Roseville in the first round of the section tournament.

Returning to the team this year are a number of key players, including Jack Lyden, Logan Dirkx, John Qiu, Tyler Jordahl, Gannon Waddington, Trey Lervick, Chris Rolfing and Lee Broadbent. Lyden, a senior, led the team in scoring with 24 points last year, followed by Broadbent with 18 points and Dirkx with 17 points.

The team will need to replace a few of its top players from a year ago, however, as the Royals said good-bye to 2012 graduates Jeff Rech, Derek Beibel, Adam Herold-Plakut and starting goalie Mac Mitsch last spring.

Freshman Chris Rolfing will likely take over for Mitsch in nets for Woodbury. Last year, as an eighth grader, Rolfing played in three games, going 0-1 with a 5.43 goals against average and a .739 save percentage.

This year, White Bear Lake - the defending conference champ - Stillwater and Roseville will likely be the teams to beat in the Suburban East Conference. In Section 4, which was drastically realigned this year, White Bear Lake will also likely be the top team, with Stillwater and Mahtomedi also in the mix.

Woodbury opens the season at home on Monday, April 22, against conference foe Forest Lake. Other key games include: against Roseville at home on Monday, May 6, at Stillwater on Wednesday, May 8, and at home against White Bear Lake on Monday, May 13.

Woodbury will also have its annual showdown with East Ridge and Park for the "SoWashCo Cup" this season. The Royals, who have yet to lose to either of its District 833 foes, travel to Park on May 1 and are at East Ridge on May 20.
