Woodbury boys hockey: Royals close conference play with pair of losses

The Royals fell twice last week in two tough Suburban East Conference road games, with the regular season drawing to a close.

Woodbury lost 5-2 on Thursday, Jan. 31, to Mounds View and was beaten 5-1 on Saturday, Feb. 2, by Forest Lake. Woodbury's record now stands at 6-12-3 overall and 1-11-3 in the SEC.

Against Mounds View - the second-place team in the SEC - the Royals started off strong, battling to 2-1 lead in the second period. Dan Armstrong, assisted by Jordan Graham, scored first for the Royals in the first period on a goal that brought the score to a 1-1 tie. Graham, on an assist by Ford Pendleton, put Woodbury ahead 2-1 in the second.

The Mustangs went in control after that, however, scoring four unanswered goals. Sophomore goaltender Austen Maculus took the loss; he stopped six of nine shots faced. Fellow sophomore Zach Gartner shared goalie duties, fending off 10 of Mounds View's 12 shots. Woodbury lodged 25 shots on goal against the Mustangs.

In the Forest Lake game, senior Max Cahill was Woodbury's lone goal scorer. Gartner, again sharing goaltender duties with Macalus, shouldered the heavier load against the Rangers, stopping 29 of

33 shots faced. The Royals' string of road games concludes with Thursday's game against non-conference foe Apple Valley. Woodbury returns to home ice at Bielenberg Ice Arena on Saturday, when it plays cross-town rival East Ridge.
