East Ridge wrestling: Lyden stands out for East Ridge wrestlers

The Raptors grapplers couldn't get on the right track last week, losing big to Bloomington Kennedy and finishing sixth of eight teams in a Zimmerman meet.

Individually, however, there were signs of promise. At the Zimmerman Thunder Invitational, East Ridge turned in 10 place winners, led by sophomore Reid Lyden.

The 113-pounder won his class at the tournament - his second at Zimmerman, after winning last year's class at 103 pounds.

Eighth grader MJ Okada (106), senior Jon Balagot (170), sophomore Nate Tigges (195) and senior Sean Kallevig (285) all earned runner-up distinctions at Zimmerman. Balagot's final round represented his first tournament final, said East Ridge wrestling coach Hans Horning.

Tigges' runner-up finish was an improbable finish, given the weight disparity between him and his compeititor. Horning said Tigges weighed in at 175 pounds "after drinking plenty of water to qualify for the 195 weight class."

"Nate does a great job for us," Horning said. "He wants to be in our lineup and the only spot for him right now is 195. He gives up a great deal of weight but never backs down. I can't wait to see him wrestle at 170 when that spot opens up."

East Ridge's 56-10 loss Thursday, Jan. 12, to Bloomington came during parents' night.

"We looked a little flat," Horning said. "Maybe we were distracted by parents' night, but we just didn't wrestle our best."

The only two Raptors to secure wins in the match were Balagot and Kallevig. Horning said Balagot "cruised" to the decision at 160, winning 10-2. Kallevig "continued his aggressive wrestling," Horning said, and finished the 8-6 win with a takedown at the buzzer.

The Raptors wrestle Mounds View on Thursday before taking on White Bear lake and Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday. East Ridge will compete Saturday in the Minnehaha Invitational.
