Volleyball: New Life rolls in early section play

Body:

This one was almost too easy.

Fourth-seeded New Life Academy romped past visiting North Lake Academy in the second round of Section 4A volleyball Wednesday, Oct. 25.

The host Eagles easily won in straight sets, defeating the 13th-seeded Huskies 25-5, 25-5, 25-7.

Stellar serving by players such as junior Kate Rogers and sophomore Hannah George keyed the Eagles. Many of New Life's points came on serves that the Huskies simply couldn't handle or return.

The Eagles also displayed superior passing, head coach Wally Bomgren said. New Life's hitters were also dominating up front.

New Life then beat fifth-seeded Maranatha Christian (17-12) in straight sets Friday, Oct. 27, in a section quarterfinal game — 25-17, 25-16, 25-20. New Life advanced to the section semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 31, where it will face top-seeded Mounds Park Academy (20-2).

New Life improved to 16-13 on the season with last week's section wins. The Eagles have played a rugged schedule against bigger school teams such as North St. Paul, Edina, Roseville and Wayzata. That hasn't helped their record, but it toughened them up for a long section run, noted Bomgren.

"We've been pretty good at playing to the level of our competition," Bomgren said.
