Girls tennis: Woodbury upsets East Ridge 4-3 in section tourney

The Woodbury girls tennis team turned the tables on rival East Ridge when it mattered the most.

Woodbury, seeded fifth in Section 4AA, edged East Ridge, the fourth seed,  4-3 in the section quarterfinals on Wednesday at East Ridge High School in Woodbury.

East Ridge topped Woodbury 4-3 earlier this year in the two Woodbury-based teams’ regular season matchup.

For Woodbury, senior Angie Drehmel and freshman Ellie Kreibich won a key match at No. 3 doubles in a third set after losing the first set and winning the next two. In singles play, freshman Mackenzie Schurhamer won at No. 2 singles and freshman Maura Stevenson won at fourth singles. Also, Woodbury’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Katie Kreibich and Taylor Monkman earned a big win over East Ridge’s Natalie Robinson and Taylor Anderson, who were state tournament entrants last season.

The Royals will take on Hill-Murray in the Section 4AA semifinal on Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Hill-Murray, the top seed in Section 4AA, also beat East Ridge, 4-3, in the final week of the regular season. Mahtomedi – the section’s No. 2 seed will face third-seeded Stillwater in the other semifinal.
