Sports Announcements: District 833 cross country meet, Ponds at Battle Creek Chili Cook-Off tourney, and more

Wrestling coaches needed

South Washington County Schools Community Education is looking for a middle school wrestling coach for Cottage Grove and Oltman middle schools and a Park Youth Wrestling coach. Cottage Grove and Oltman middle school coach is a paid position for grades 6-8. The season runs Oct. 6 – Jan. 11, Monday-Friday, 3-5 p.m. The Park Youth Program position is for Monday and Wednesday evenings in November and December and possibly January through March. District 833 Cross Country Meet Oct. 8 at Bailey Elementary

The popular annual District 833 Cross Country Meet for boys and girls in grades 3-6 will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Bailey Elementary. The race is sponsored by the district’s elementary physical education teachers, along with the Woodbury and East Ridge high school cross country teams. The race is 1.5 miles and is broken into four divisions: third and fourth grade boys, fifth and sixth grade boys, third and fourth grade girls and fifth and sixth grade girls. Plaques will be awarded for the for first place girl and boy in each grade level, ribbons for the top ten place winners in each division, and participation ribbons for all who finish. Cost is $2. Races begin at 4:15 p.m. Register through your physical education teacher or sign up the day of the race. Race day registration begins at 3:50 p.m. and closes at 4:10 p.m.

All those East Ridge High School boundary girls interested in playing lacrosse should register on the East Ridge girls lacrosse website to stay up-to-date on important information. Inaugural Chili Cook-Off Open Oct. 5 at The Ponds at Battle Creek

The Battle Creek Men’s Club Inaugural Chili Cook-Off Open will be held Oct. 5 at The Ponds at Battle Creek golf course. The three-man scramble is open to all players, including professionals, and will have a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Only one pro player is allowed per team, and all players will play from the same tees. In addition to the golf tournament, the event will also feature a chili cook-off contest. Players are encouraged to bring one or more slow cookers full of chili to enter into the contest. Cook-off participants will receive a certificate for two 9-hole greens fees with a cart good for the remainder of the 2013 season.

Entry fees for the tournament are $50.00 per player, or $150 per team, and cover green fees, carts, giant skins, prizes and the chili buffet. East Ridge traveling softball tryouts

East Ridge Athletic Association traveling softball tryouts for the spring and summer of 2014 will take place Oct. 5 and 6 at the East Ridge High School softball fields (Black 35 and 36). Rain location will be the ERHS gym.

The teams are open to any girls who reside within the East Ridge High School attendance boundary areas of Cottage Grove, Afton, Newport, Denmark Township and Woodbury. The ERAA also offers a number of pitching, hitting, and fielding clinics throughout the winter months. These clinics are conducted by the East Ridge High School Softball coaching staff. No additional fees are charged to attend these clinics if you are a member of the ERAA program. For those not interested in traveling softball or are new to the game, East Ridge Softball also offers recreational teams with a primary focus on learning the fundamentals of softball. This league runs from May to July and plays in a league with teams from CGAA, WAA, Newport and Oakdale. Registration for our in-house program will open in early February.
