Woodbury girls soccer: Royals extend win streak to eight

Meghan Konop helped the Woodbury girls soccer team need only a goal in two of their wins this past week.

The junior goalkeeper earned two shutouts as the Royals extended their winning streak to eight. Woodbury shutout Suburban East Conference foe Roseville 2-0 on Sept. 24, and No. 6 ranked Edina 1-0 in a non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Royals also doubled up Stillwater 4-2 during the week on Thursday, Sept. 26.

“Meghan Konop has been fabulous in goal,” Royals coach Pat Malicki said.

Konop earned her fourth-consecutive shutout following the 2-0 win over Roseville. Against a strong Edina offense, she stopped nine shots on goal to preserve the win.

Senior midfielder Maddie Gaffney provided Konop plenty of support on the offensive end in those games. Gaffney had goals in all three games. She scored both goals in the win over Roseville, and sophomore forward Kim Taplin found her for the game-winner against Edina. Freshman midfielder Rachel Hewitt assisted on one of Gaffney’s goals against Roseville, and senior midfielder Sara Apanian assisted on the other.

Taplin, Hewitt and Dani Nelson all scored goals at Stillwater as the Royals staved off a rally by the Ponies. Nelson opened the scoring for the Royals in the first half as they built a 2-0 lead. The Ponies tied it up in the second half, 2-2, but Gaffney broke the tie with a goal.

Konop stopped 12 shots in the game to help hold off a Pony rally. Hewitt assisted on two goals for the Royals, and junior defender Mollie Hanselman had an assist.

The Royals (10-4, 6-1 SEC) have a critical final week of the season in their quest for the Suburban East Conference crown. They play their cross-town rival, East Ridge (9-5, 4-3 SEC) on Tuesday, and they take on unbeaten Mounds View (13-0, 7-0 SEC). The Mustangs, No. 2 in Class AA, have risen through the rankings throughout the season.
