Woodbury girls tennis: Royals beat Bears 5-2

The Woodbury girls tennis team earned a Suburban East Conference victory last week with a 5-2 win over White Bear Lake on Tuesday in Woodbury.

The Royals were led by senior captains Shanna Stevenson, Taylor Monkman and Katie Kriebich. Stevenson won her match at No. 1 singles and Monkman and Kriebich earned a win as the Royals' No. 1 doubles pairing.

Also, freshman Maura Stevenson pulled out a tough three-setter for the Royals and Angie Drehmel and Ellie Kreibich won at third doubles. In addition, sophomore Brooke Hays won at third singles in straight sets.

“Brooke is playing incredibly well right now and we need her to keep getting better,” Woodbury head coach Mike Moran said. “Maura Stevenson showed great grit and determination in winning at fourth singles in three sets. Maura was fighting a cold and you could tell that she was physically drained from the sickness.”

Moran said he constantly tells the girls that they have to focus on what they can control and block everything else out.

The Royals have a tough week ahead with four matches in four days.

Woodbury took on Mahtomedi on Monday and conference leader Forest Lake on Tuesday, after the Bulletin went to print.

Next, the Royals face off against Stillwater to make up last week's rescheduled match. Thursday, they wrap up the week against perennial power Mounds View and Friday the team will partake in the homecoming parade.
