East Ridge girls tennis: Raptors sweep Bears to open conference season

The East Ridge girls tennis team opened Suburban East Conference play with a 7-0 sweep of White Bear Lake on Thursday, Aug. 29, in Woodbury.

“It was a nice start to the conference season,” East Ridge fifth year head coach Jon Rydberg said. “Well played by everyone, but still room to grow.”

East Ridge (1-0; 1-0 SEC) didn’t lose a set in the win.

East Ridge sophomore Natalie Robinson won 6-4, 6-2 over Michaela Phelps at No. 1 singles. Her sister Nicole Robinson won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0 over Kate Blanding. At third singles, sophomore Minh-Tu Van won 6-2, 6-1 over Olivia Kunshies and at fourth singles, Sahana Iyer won 6-4, 6-3 over Caroline Sass.

In doubles play, the Raptors’ top pairing of seniors Taylor Anderson and Anna Bearrood won 6-2, 7-5, while eighth graders Regan Dolezal and Megan Karrow won 6-3, 6-3 at second doubles and Katelyn Champoux and Audri Sturm won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.

In addition to the win over the Bears, East Ridge rescheduled last week’s match with Lakeville South and canceled its match with Red Wing due to heat.

East Ridge battled rival Woodbury on Tuesday after the Bulletin went to print. Next, the Raptors head to Stillwater to take on the Ponies on Thursday.
