New Life Academy girls basketball: Eagles extend win streak to six straight before loss to Minnehaha

From left, New Life Academy's Val Hohol and Abby Thor shut the door on an opponent. NLA went 2-1 last week to improve to 6-11 overall.

At the start of January, the New Life Academy girls basketball team didn't have a win on its season. The Eagles then were able to rattle off six wins in a row, including two to start the week on Tuesday and Thursday.

On Tuesday, New Life traveled to MCAA conference foe Bethany Academy in Bloomington for a battle of the Eagles, and the Eagles (6-11; 4-2 MCAA) were the victors, winning 60-23.

In a game that New Life controlled from the onset, jumping ahead 24-6 at halftime, New Life used constant pressure on defense and a controlled attack on offense to keep Bethany Academy (1-12; 0-6 MCAA) on its heels.

Sophomore Valerie Hohol led the way for New Life with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

The winning ways continued Thursday night as the Eagles traveled to Legacy Christian Academy's home court in Andover, winning 48-35.

Three different New Life players scored in the double digits, with Hohol once again leading the way with 19 points. She also had 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles again. Senior Sydney Steele and junior Emily Bouldan were the other two Eagles to score double digit totals, as Steele finished the night with 11 points and Bouldan had 10.

The Eagles used a balanced attack to defeat Legacy (6-8; 1-4 MCAA), as they scored 24 points in both halves and keeping the home team to just 15 first half points.

The winning magic would not continue into the weekend for New Life, however, as they lost 71-53 on Saturday to non-conference foe Minnehaha Academy despite a 23-point effort by Bouldan.

Bolduan led all scorers during the game with her total, but the Eagles could not keep pace with Minnehaha Academy (10-3), trailing 40-32 at the halfway point before they were outpaced 31-21 in the second half to give them the 71-53 end result.

The Eagles were at home on Tuesday, Jan. 22, after the Bulletin went to print, against West Lutheran (10-6; 4-1 MCAA). Next, NLA is at Heritage Christian (1-12; 1-4 MCAA) on Friday, Jan. 25.
