East Ridge boys swimming & diving: Raptors hit pool for first time, take third at conference relays

The East Ridge boys swimming and diving team got off to a good start last week.

The Raptors opened their season with a third-place finish at the annual Suburban East Conference Relays meet, held Thursday, Dec. 6 at Stillwater Junior High School.

Stillwater won the meet with 120 points, just ahead of Mounds View, which placed second with 112 points. East Ridge placed third with 98 points, followed by Hastings in fourth with 88 points, and Woodbury in fifth with 68 points. District rival Park also placed seventh out of the 10 teams with 42 points.

East Ridge won the first race of the meet, the 400-yard medley relay, and they were only one second off of the meet record set by another East Ridge team the previous year. The Raptors' team of Sam Scholz, James Tidd, Kent Rabideaux and Garrett Verhoeven earned the time of 3 minutes, 44.27 seconds - just off the meet record of 3:43.71, held by Austin Davidson, Rabideaux, Matt Koken, and Scholz from last season.

The 400-yard individual medley relay team of Alex Heide, Pierce Firebaugh, Scholz and Ryan Schiferl placed second with a time of 4:05.28. The 850-yard crescendo relay, 200-yard backstroke relay, and 400-yard freestyle relay teams from East Ridge all placed second. Mason Pflieger, Tyler Langstraat, Aleksander Holleran, and Verhoeven made up the crescendo relay team, while Langstraat, Tidd, Scholz, and Schiferl made up the 200 backstroke relay team, and Firebaugh, Verhoeven, Holleran, and Rabideaux made up the 400 freestyle relay team.

East Ridge's first dual meet will be Thursday, Dec. 13 at home against Mounds View. The meet will be at 6 p.m. at Woodbury Middle School.
