East Ridge volleyball: Raptors earn first win of 2012

The East Ridge girls volleyball team won its first match of the season at home against Edina on Tuesday.

Through a great team effort, the Raptors were able to edge out Edina 3-1 in front of the home crowd. The scores of the games were 25-22, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-22.

The team improved its overall consistency, playing well as a unit from top to bottom.

The Raptors followed up their win over Edina with a 32-team tournament in Marshall with some of the state's best talent on display.

East Ridge went 2-3 in the tournament and finished in 22nd place. The Raptors began the tournament with a loss to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa by scores of 27-25, 19-25 and 11-15.

In their second match of the tournament, East Ridge defeated Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 25-27, 25-20 and 15-6. They lost the next match in a tight one to Northfield 25-19, 19-25 and 14-16.

In the consolation matches, East Ridge defeated Andover 25-11 and 25-16, but finished the tournament losing to Totino Grace 24-26 and 20-25.

First-year Head Coach Erin Nickelby said she hoped the team would have been able to finish higher.

Leading the Raptors with 41 kills was senior Margaret Eggert. Sydney Kleinhuizen led the team in digs with 48, and Kleinhuizen also tied for the lead with Makayla Sauro in aces with 7.

The Raptors face Mounds View Thursday evening at home in the Raptors Perch.
