Candidate Viewpoint: Sharon Van Leer

By Sharon Van Leer

My name is Sharon Van Leer. I am running for the South Washington County School Board because I know I will bring a fresh perspective. My family and I have lived in Woodbury for over three decades. I was a former community member of the Equity and Integration Board. As a parent of six, and foster parent to 30 children, I know the importance of building community and developing strong relationships. Serving on the school board would allow me to continue advocating for children. I want to make sure that we deliver on the promises made to the community.

As a board member, I will:

- Continue to support academic excellence that is student-centered, so every child has access to opportunities that prepare them for a successful future in a global society

- Continue to build and strengthen relationships between parents, students, teachers and the community so they are empowered, welcomed, valued, and respected.

- Maintain our strong financial standing and ensure that our tax dollars are spent making sound, ethical and fiscal decisions.

- And finally – “Are We Ready” to make school safety an important commitment?  That our children are safe inside and outside of our schools, and to make certain they learn responsibility for civility and safety.

I firmly support passage of the levy and encourage community participation in voting “yes” on the three referendum questions. The Legislature does not provide adequate funding for school districts, and has not for many years. We need the community’s help to maintain adequate funding for a quality education.

I am very humbled to receive the endorsement of retired school superintendent Tom Nelson.  “I know our school district’s students will be best served by electing Sharon Van Leer to the ISD 833 School Board,” he wrote.

The future of our children is in our hands. Our vision is reachable — if we stand together. We must be a community where our voices are heard and valued. Together we stand, united we succeed.
