Boys' hockey: Park gets an early start to the season
The Park boys' hockey team did not waste any time getting a sneak peak of its roster for the season.
The Wolfpack made the trip to Apple Valley over Thanksgiving weekend to start its season. Those games did not go the way Park had hoped in two high-scoring losses. Park first lost 5-3 to Eastview Friday, following that with a 6-5 loss to Apple Valley Saturday. Ryan Lucas, Keegan Oberding and Mason Porter scored goals against Eastview. Grant Glazier scored twice in Saturday's game against Apple Valley, with Travis Montez, Matthew Moreland and Zakk Morse also adding one goal each.
After the two early season losses, head coach Jay Moser said the Wolfpack will have things to work on as the season progresses.
"We didn't respond to adversity really well, and we had a lot of guys, especially upperclassmen, who showed some quit," Moser said. "And that's not what you're looking for at the start of the season."
Park graduated nine seniors last season, leaving some spots for varsity newcomers to fill.
"We kept most of our scoring, so that was the upside going into the start of the season," Moser said.
Park will need to find replacements for two defensemen who graduated last season. They have started the season a bit thin at defensemen while it gets young players ready to play at the varsity level.
"Those two roles are going to be filled by a couple of our returning players, but we didn't really have the depth at the JV or Bantam level from last year to step in a fill the void left by those guys," Moser said. "It's going to take a little bit of time."
Last season, Park finished with an overall record of 12-13-2. Once the Wolfpack settle in, Moser said the team's goals should be about what they were last season.
"I think pretty similar," Moser said. "Our nonconference schedule this year is considerably tougher. We traded out some softer teams for section opponents."
Park will play host to two nonconference teams this week, starting with Eagan at home on Thursday, Nov. 30, and Tartan on Saturday, Dec. 2.
