Two contested races in Afton; Richter files after Ward 2 no-show

The last day of filing was quickly approaching and still no one had filed for Afton City Council’s Ward 2.

So Council Member Joe Richter, who currently holds the seat, decided to throw his name in for a third term, even though he hadn’t intended to.

“I believe in term limits, so I would have gladly stepped aside,” he said. “However, I didn’t hear of anybody coming forward. Plus, I think we have a council that’s functioning pretty well right now.

“But, it kind of came down to the wire and nobody had put in.”

Richter, whose seat remained uncontested when the filing period closed on Aug. 12, will be joined by four other candidates in this year’s Afton election – two candidates for mayor and two candidates for the Ward 3 seat.

Current Mayor Dick Bend is being challenged by newcomer Bill Whalen and Council Member Peg Nolz is being challenged by Stan Ross.
